The metropolis of Fort Smith is the second major city In Arkansas. It started its history in 1803 when it became a part of Louisiana Purchase and it will soon be celebrating its 200 anniversary. The location was established in 1817 and was named after General Thomas Smith who ironically never visited the place.

Fort Smith, Arkansas has played an important role in the settling the west in the United States. In 1803, the city was purchased from the French as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Several other states were also purchased at the same time. As the fort continued to grow through out the years, it was used by the Confederate Army when the Civil War began, but was taken over by the Union. It then became a safe haven for slaves and orphans. The top five occupations for Fort Smith residents are included on the list of 25 Best Small Cities for Jobs and Business in America. Though listed as a small city, Fort Smith is only second to Little Rock as the largest city in Arkansas. Before US soldiers arrived and built the original fort, in 1817, the area was known as Belle Point, so named by French fur traders. When the United States made what is known as the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the site of Fort Smith, Arkansas came along with it. Fort Smith, located in Sebastian County, was named after General Thomas Adams Smith, a commander of the Army Rifle Regiment. General Smith sent engineers looking for a place along the Arkansas River to construct a fort. In 1817 the land was developed and Fort Smith was founded as a Military Outpost. General Smith, who died in 1844, never visited the Fort.
